The da Vinci Institute is a community school based on common sense and human dignity. It is important that all students and their parents/guardians attending da Vinci clearly understand and accept the following expectations:
I. LEARNING EXPECTATIONS:
Students will bring to the da Vinci Community a desire to learn and willingness to work. Students who choose not to learn cannot be successful at da Vinci. Teachers will offer students every possible opportunity to engage in the learning process.
PROCEDURE:
A. Students who choose not to become involved in the learning process will meet with staff to discuss the problem and how da Vinci could be more helpful. Parents will be notified.
B. If the problem continues, a conference with parents will be held to discuss the situation further. It will be made clear that the problem must be solved if the student wishes to continue attending
da Vinci.
C. In the unlikely event that the student continues to choose not to learn, a conference with parents will be held to discuss a transfer to another educational program.
II. ATTENDANCE TARDY POLICY:
Students are expected to attend school every day and be on time for all classes. If a student must be absent, parents are asked to notify the school by 9:00 a.m.
PROCEDURE:
A. Students with an attendance or tardy problem will be notified in writing in an attempt to bring attention to and to solve the problem.
B. If the problem continues, a conference with parents will be held to discuss the situation further. It will be made clear that the problem must be solved if the student wishes to continue attending
da Vinci. A referral to the Jackson County Truancy Officer will be made.
C. Should the student continue to be absent or tardy, a meeting with parents will be held to discuss a transfer to another educational program
III. ELECTRONIC DEVICES POLICY:
A. State law does not allow pagers, beepers, mobile/cellular phones and similar devices. Such items will become the property of the school and will be returned directly to parents upon their request.
B. Students are not permitted to bring laser pointers to school.
C. The da Vinci Institute is not responsible for lost or stolen personal property.
IV. CLOSED CAMPUS POLICY:
Students are expected to attend all classes and remain on the da Vinci School campus for the entire school day. Students who wish to walk, ride bikes, or ride home with another student must have prior permission on file in the office or give prior notification. Students who choose to leave school property during the school day will face the following consequences.
PROCEDURE:
A. Staff will attempt to retrieve a student, and return them to school. Parents will be notified and asked to come to school to pick up their child.
B. If staff are unable to retrieve a student, the police will be notified to arrange a safe pick-up for the child. Parents will be notified and a meeting with staff will be arranged.
C. In the unlikely event that the student continues to choose to leave school property, a conference with parents will be held to discuss a transfer to another educational program.
V. Appropriate language will be used at all times. Profane, racial, violent or sexual comments will not be tolerated. Language of this type may result in suspension from school. Repeated use of inappropriate language may result in expulsion.
VI. Students are expected to dress appropriately for school and related activities. Students are expected to be neat and clean. Clothing that exposes undergarments or bare midriffs will not be allowed. Inappropriate clothing such as tank tops, short shorts or clothing that has sexual or gang related connotations, advertises alcohol, tobacco violence or other such items are not acceptable.
VII. Students at da Vinci are encouraged to live healthy lifestyles. Because the well-being of all da Vinci students is top priority, tobacco, drugs, drug paraphernalia, look-alike drugs and alcohol are not allowed in the da Vinci community or related activities. Should this occur there will be an automatic school suspension, parents will be called and the police may be notified. Violations of this type may result in expulsion from The da Vinci Institute.
VIII. Violence and weapons will not be tolerated at any time for any reason. Students who choose to play in a rough-housing manner, fight, promote a fight, assault a person in which a physical injury occurs, make malicious remarks or involve themselves in other hurtful or harmful choices that are conducted with a willful intent, will face serious consequences. Violations of this type will necessitate parental notification. Corrective action will be taken by staff on a case by case basis. Depending upon severity of the offense, violations of this type may result in a variety of disciplinary actions including suspension or expulsion.
IX. Transportation to and from school will need to be arranged by each family. All students should be picked up from school NO LATER THAN 11:40 on half days and 3:20 on full days.
X. Films and/or photographs may be taken of students for community presentations or publicity reasons.
XI. Parent involvement is crucial to the success of all students and contributes greatly to the overall caring and nurturing atmosphere at The da Vinci Institute. Parents/Guardians are invited and strongly encouraged to become involved in the programs and activities of the school.
